This report presents the final results of the DEMETRA research on the Labour Situation and Strategies of Farm women in Diversified Rural Areas in Europe. The research was carried out against the background of the changing context in rural areas, of which the developments in agriculture play a particular role. The central research objective is to explain the labour situation of farm women in different rural areas in Europe and to contribute to their socio-economic integration in the society (Overbeek et al. 1994). Until now, attention on the labour situation of women who are living with farmers or managing a farm themselves, has had usually an agricultural focus. Due to the increase of other employment, more mobility and education opportunities, and changes in the social networks of women, such an approach has become too restricted. Therefore an approach of integrating agricultural and other factors will be more suitable for analyzing the labour situation of farm women. The main factors that will be discussed are the developments in the economic and social structure, the infrastructure and related services, and the existing policies and values in rural areas. Those factors will be analyzed both at the level of the study area as a whole and at level of individual farm women. The research has been conducted in study areas in four countries in Europe, of which Greece, Italy and the Netherlands belong to the European Union and Norway does not. In those countries the rural areas are quite different, if we consider their morphological, functional and cultural characteristics. In Norway, most of the rural areas are very sparsely populated with hardly any urban development according to European standards, while the opposite situation holds for the Netherlands where most of the rural areas are densely populated. In Italy, most of the rural areas have a moderate population density, whereas in Greece some rural areas are moderately populated, while other ones are sparsely populated and coping with a process of urbanization. Only in Greece, many rural areas are still dominated by employment in agriculture, whereas in the other participating countries, rural areas have more industries or services, or they are becoming residence areas. Differences in the cultural characteristics of the rural areas are partly related to those morphological and functional differences, but also to other influences like the development of the welfare state.
