Abstract

Polyethylene sheeting supported on a framework was used in a greenhouse to maintain a high RH over the crop at night so that a root pressure flow could develop. The plants (growing in 1-litre buckets of peat mixed with 5 kg Dolokal (ground magnesium limestone), 500 g PG mix (14 + 16 + 18 + trace elements), and 150 g FTE (fritted trace elements) per msuperscript 3)were watered with nutrient solutions of EC 1.5, 3.0 or 4.5 dS/m (25 degrees C), and half were sprayed with 0.7% Ca(NO3)2. Almost complete prevention of tipburn incidence was obtained where high RH was used with a low EC solution. Calcium spraying did not further decrease tipburn. The technical possibilities of realizing a high night RH in greenhouses are discussed. (Abstract retrieved from CAB Abstracts by CABI’s permission)
