Abstract

Leaf development in winter rye cv. Petkuser and Zelder [see F.C.A. 17: 1341] was further studied in 1962-3, after sowing on 25 Sep. Average stalk length increased with final number of leaves (11-14). Plants attained the same final leaf number either by a rapid rate of leaf emergence before winter and a slow rate after winter, or the reverse; the former growth pattern produced earlier emergence and greater areas of the 2 uppermost leaves, longer upper leaf sheaths, longer upper (and shorter lower) internodes, and slightly more spikelets/ear.-W.M.S.R.
