Abstract

The work of the University of Agriculture, Wageningen, Netherlands, in carrying out research on crop plants, breeding new varieties and advising farmers on the best varieties to grow is reviewed briefly. Present work is concentrated on breeding for resistance to Phytophthora infestans in potatoes and for resistance to various diseases in flax and the bitter lupin. It is concluded that expenditure on research in the Netherlands is fully justified by the increased yields obtained from improved varieties of crop plants.
