Abstract

The optimal depth of drainage for field and herbage crops in the Netherlands is discussed. On clay soils, arable crops are unlikely to suffer from water shortage when water tables are about 130 cm. below the surface. Grass crops kept short by mowing or grazing may suffer from water shortage when the water table is lower than 50 cm. below the surface.-W.J.B.
