Abstract

In greenhouse studies, the growth of 1-yr-old Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) seedlings decreased and mortality increased with increasing soil acidity when pH was <=4.0. Growth reduction at low pH was greater with NH4-N than with NO3-N. Aluminium in the soil solution increased exponentially with decreasing soil pH below 4.0, especially with NH4 fertilizer. Al concn. were high in the needles on the extremely acid soils. (Abstract retrieved from CAB Abstracts by CABI’s permission)
