Afname van amfibieën en populatieconnectiviteit in Pas de Calais, Frankrijk, in de periode 1974-2011

Amphibian decline and reduced population connectivity in Pas de Calais, France, in the period 1974-2011 We surveyed the amphibians of the coastal section of the French ‘département’ Pas de Calais in 1974 and in 2011. Aims of the study were to associate the presence of species in breeding ponds with the characteristics of the surrounding terrestrial environment and to document changes in the presence / absence of species over time. We also developed a model describing the degree of connectivity among breeding ponds. In 1974 we observed 13 species. The same species were found in 2011 with exception of the Moor frog. The number of ponds with amphibians declined. Much of the decline could be linked to the conversion of land use from pasture to arable land. Pond occupancy did not change much for most species with exception of the Northern crested newt. Moreover, a strong decline was observed for the Midwife toad, more severe than could be explained by pond disappearances. Ponds in the coastal dunes largely remained intact and currently present the most species-rich amphibian breeding localities of the region. Elsewhere amphibian populations became increasingly isolated through increasing inter-pond distances and the decreased permeability of the intervening terrestrial habitats to amphibian dispersal. Twenty- two newly created ponds improved the ecosystem for amphibians and also yielded information on dispersal and colonization. Amfibieënpopulaties staan wereldwijd onder druk door het verdwijnen of verslechteren van leefgebied, door invasieve soorten, klimaatverandering en ziekten. De grootste bedreiging voor amfibieën in Europa lijkt echter verandering in landgebruik te zijn en de daarmee samengaande verdwijning van voortplantingswateren. Wij beschrijven de resultaten van meerdere inventarisaties in Pas de Calais, Frankrijk, uitgevoerd over een tijdsspanne van 38 jaar. Doelstellingen waren te achterhalen 1) hoe de verspreiding van soorten zich verhoudt tot het omringend landgebruik, 2) hoe de samenstelling van populaties over de tijd veranderde en 3) wat mogelijk het effect is van een veranderend landgebruik op de mate van verbreiding.
